COVID-19 OPERATIONS UPDATE

With the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, we want to reassure you that the Jonnycake Center of Westerly is committed to serving our neighbors facing crisis, and we have adjusted our programming and operations in order to safely feed, serve, and provide for the community. Please find a full Center update below:

Food Pantry:

  • The Food Pantry and Social Services office are open 5 days per week. The hours for both the Pantry and Social Services are:
    • Mondays: 12pm to 3pm
    • Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, & Fridays: 9am to 12pm
    • Saturdays & Sundays: closed
  • The Food Pantry is operating on a modified service model in order to provide as much food for as many clients as possible. Client Choice is temporarily suspended, but we anticipate re-implementing it as soon as we can.
  • SPLASH meal kits are available every week during the summer for families in need with school-age children. Each kit contains a week’s worth of healthy breakfast and lunch supplies.   • The Food Pantry is a distribution point for Westerly Public Schools’ “Grab and Go” breakfast and lunch meal kits, which are distributed from the Aramark van across Industrial Drive from the Jonnycake Center of Westerly between 12pm and 1pm Mondays through Fridays.
  • Food Donations are accepted by appointment only. Please email FoodDonations@jonnycake.org with the subject line “Food Donation” to reserve a dropoff time.
  • To register to access the Pantry, please contact Sarah Cote, Social Services Program Director, at scote@jonnycake.org or (401) 377-8069, Extension 110.

Social Services:

  • The Social Services office is staffed and continues to assist clients 5 days per week. Most services are offered remotely, but some on-site services are suspended.
  • Social Services continues to provide emergency financial assistance as necessary.
  • For general questions about Services, please call (401) 377-8069 and select Option 1.
  • To register for Social Services, or to inquire about financial assistance, please contact Sarah Cote, Social Services Program Director, at scote@jonnycake.org or (401) 377-8069, Extension 110.
  • Clients arriving to the Jonnycake Center of Westerly for the Food Pantry, SPLASH, or to receive Thrift Store Voucher assistance can visit the Social Services office during its open hours to check in.

Thrift Store:

  • To protect the Food Pantry and the safety of shoppers, volunteers, and staff, new Thrift Store shopping policies are in place.
    • Store hours are: Tuesdays (11am to 4pm), Wednesdays (12pm to 4pm), Thursdays (9am to 4pm), Fridays (12pm to 4pm), and Saturdays (9am to 4pm). Senior shopping hours are on Tuesday mornings (9am to 11am). The last store entry will be at 3:30pm daily.
    • With the likelihood of lines outside our building, and to avoid confusion in exiting, we suggest shoppers park in the public parking lot across Industrial Drive from Jonnycake. Shoppers are not allowed to enter or exit through our donation processing area.
    • A limited number of shoppers will be allowed in the Jonnycake Center of Westerly’s Thrift Store at one time. This number includes children and everyone in your party. We request that shopping trips are made solo, or with only one other person. If the store is full, arriving shoppers will be asked to wait outside.
    • To gain entry to our building, everybody must wear a face mask. Zero exceptions will be allowed. Additionally, Jonnycake staff will greet you at the door to take your forehead temperature and ask a few questions about your recent health and risk factors. Answering these questions is essential to protecting our on-site Food Pantry, as well as the health of fellow shoppers, volunteers, and Jonnycake staff.
    • Please follow the one-way arrows in our aisles and maintain 6-foot social distancing spacing when shopping.
    • Furniture deliveries are temporarily suspended.
    • We are following all mandates to keep our store sufficiently staffed and thoroughly sanitized.
    • We appreciate your patience during this time. Our new Thrift policies have been put in place out of an abundance of caution to protect everybody in our building and to safeguard our Food Pantry. Shoppers who do not follow our guidelines may be asked to leave and return another time.
  • The Thrift Store accepts pre-scheduled, no-contact item donations.
    • We strongly encourage Thrift donors to wait until social distancing guidelines are eased before donating to the Jonnycake Thrift Store.
    • However, if you need to donate more urgently, email ThriftDonations@jonnycake.org with your name, a description of the item(s) you’d like to donate, and a preferred window of time to drop off at Jonnycake. We will confirm your email or reach out with questions, if necessary.
    • Donated furniture can be picked up from the Jonnycake truck on a very limited basis. To schedule an appointment, email ThriftDonations@jonnycake.org with the subject line “Furniture pickup.”
    • Staff are temporarily refraining from entering domiciles. Furniture for the truck must be made available outside your place of residence. We regret any inconvenience caused.
    • Unscheduled donations to the Thrift Store are temporarily suspended.
    • Leaving donated items in our entryway (dumping) is never allowed and is a punishable offense.
    • The Thrift Store cannot accept donated food items intended for the Pantry. Please contact the Pantry directly for all Food Donations: email FoodDonations@jonnycake.org with the subject line “Food donation.”
  • All Thrift proceeds directly support our Food Pantry and Social Services basic needs efforts.

Volunteering:

  • With our facility temporarily closed to the public, we are halting signups for new volunteers.
  • To be added to the volunteering interest list, please email volunteer@jonnycake.org.
  • Volunteers, both current and new, will be contacted for opportunities as soon as possible.

Giving:

  • We have been humbled by an incredible outpouring of community support. With our Thrift Store closed to the public, we have foregone one of our major sources of revenue, so financial contributions are most needed at this time.

  • April 1 marked the inaugural “401Gives,” a day of support for Rhode Island’s entire nonprofit community. Generous donors provided over $8,000 in support to the Jonnycake Center of Westerly in one day alone in support of our Food Pantry and Social Services.
  • May 5 was the first-ever #GivingTuesdayNow campaign, raising funds for non-profits worldwide. Generous neighbors gave over $4,000 to Jonnycake in this one day.
  • The United Way of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Foundation granted Jonnycake $50,000 to continue serving neighbors in need.
  • Additional funding has come from numerous other sources including private and corporate foundations, businesses and individuals – please keep an eye out for additional acknowledgements in the coming days.
